If you have a greenhouse you can get around both these problems. The first is that by growing your own trees and fruit plants from seed you can both restrict and shape their growth to suit your needs. If a tall thin tree is what you want, you can begin to pinch out side shoots from the time the tree is twelve or fourteen inches tall, alternatively a low bushy tree can be shaped by having its crown taken out with nail scissors from about sixteen to twenty inches in height. You can also restrict the root growth of your tree by potting it into only marginally larger pots each time, so that when you come to put it in the ground, you can plant it – surrounded by a ‘wall’ of corrugated iron which acts like an underground pot to stop the roots spreading. Limited root growth means restrained top growth!
And seeds, of course, cost less than a thousandth the price of a specimen tree of six to eight feet tall, so as long as you have a greenhouse, you are well on the way to growing your own orchard or forest.
Most tree seedlings do well outside in the summer, in a shady area, but in winter they can be prone to frost because they are sappy and while smaller trees appeal to rabbits (and even squirrels will take out a sapling tree by eating the skinny top branches) the larger ones make a lovely winter snack for deer, so until your trees are robust enough to survive such depredations, bring them into the unheated greenhouse for the winter.

For one, having spare cords will add to the life of each power supply. If you have 3 cords, each cord will only suffer one third of the damage and stress than if you had one! It’s considerably less than that when you consider the fact that most of the damage that happens to your power supply happens when you are continually unplugging and winding up your cord. The most common electric problem has to do with kinked or frayed wires!
I have three laptop power cords. One for my house. One in my car, and one at work. When it comes time for me to go to work in the morning, I simply unplug my laptop, put it in its case and off I go. Quick and easy! Same thing at work, and when I decide to go to the coffee shop, I reach under my passenger car seat and I am ready to go!
I am NEVER without a power supply for my laptop, and I NEVER spend time looking for my cord.
A friend of mine introduced me to this practice about 5 years ago, and I have never looked back. One of the best investments I ever made! In fact, I took it one step further and instead of buying the stock power supplies that came with my laptop, I bought a universal laptop power supply to use as both of my replacements. Vegetable & Fruit Juicing

Some people have complicated recipes for juicing, and that is all well and good. However, I have always found that basic recipes are better.
Just throw in some selected veggies into the fruit juicer and let it do its job. One recipe I like is:
- Six large carrots
- One-half large beet
- One half parsnip
- Three celery stalks
- One quarter rutabaga or other green leafy veg
- One eighth head of a white or red cabbage
- One large apple
- One cup a berry
Place in the juicer one at a time, slowly, and in the above order. If you want it sweeter then you can add another apple, add a pear or some strawberries will usually do the trick. If you don’t care for the earthy flavor, then remove the beet and the parsnip from the list. Of course, if you have a favorite veggie or fruit then you can add that as well.

Understandably, the nature holds more control on the first two factors, thus farmers can only improve the collection of sap by paying more attention on methodology.
Traditionally, sap collection is done by drilling a hole into the tree where a tap metal or plastic is inserted that will function as a faucet. A tap usually measures 7/16 inches but for smaller buckets a 5/16-inch will do. A tree with 25-inch diameter can hold three taps, 2 taps for 20-25-inch, and no more than one tap for a diameter of 10-20-inch.
In the 1960’s however, a new method was popularized through plastic tubing. In this method, several plastic pipes were attached in a tap which then create systematic tubing allowing the continuous flow of sap from the tree into a huge storage container near the location of the sugarhouse. Tap pipeline is apparently more convenient and less-arduous job, thus it’s no wonder the traditional method was outmoded.
