Using A Hose Reel Cart

December 29th, 2009

Instead of making those circles with your garden hose while you put it away, you can make this process a lot easier with a garden hose reel cart. These carts can easily reel in and store your hose without creating a lot of mess. There are different ones that you can buy. For the most part, since the cart will connected to the water source, you won’t be able to move the cart around but that depends on which model you get. There are some that also come with a cover so that you can completely conceal your garden hose away in order to make your yard look nicer. You can buy these at stores that sell garden products or even get them by going online.

Shade Grown Coffee: Delicious and Ecolicious!

November 21st, 2009

Conventional coffee plantations are replacing wildlife habitat at an alarming rate, and have been for some time. Shade grown coffee, the original method of coffee farming, offers a promising alternative.

As the coffee beans mature more slowly in the shade, natural sugars increase and enhance the flavor of the coffee. Next to tobacco, coffee is sprayed with more chemicals than any other product consumed by humans, but shade grown coffee is most often organically grown, free of chemical use. Farmers who grow coffee in shady environments are promoting local wildlife populations, protecting bird habitat and using responsible and sustainable farming methods, using little or no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Coffee plants are grown in thick forests among giant trees which filter carbon dioxide and aid in soil moisture retention, minimizing erosion that is normally a formidable problem for clear cut coffee farmers. Migrating bird populations have been in rapid decline since the introduction of “sun” coffee and the consequent destruction of rainforest for more coffee plantations. As many as 150 species of birds have been identified on shade coffee farms.

Traditionally, all coffee was shade grown. Most varieties of coffee are actually quite intolerant of direct sunlight, and prefer a canopy of sun-filtering shade trees. The trees not only protect the coffee from direct sun, they also mulch the soil with their fallen leaves, helping to retain soil moisture.

In 1972, new hybrid varieties of coffee were developed to help increase production of the valuable crop. These new varieties produced significantly more coffee beans, were smaller and easier to harvest, and produced best in direct sunlight. As a result, many growers cut their shade trees and switched to the new varieties. Of the 6 million acres of coffee lands, 60% have been stripped of shade trees since 1972. Only the small, low-tech farms, often too poor to afford chemicals, preserved their shade trees.

Unfortunately, the new varieties of “sun” coffee came with an additional cost: they were dependent on high amounts of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and it soon became apparent that this new method of growing coffee was unsustainable.  In fact it led to massive soil erosion and water runoff, as well as an estimated 20% decline in native bird populations due to habitat loss.

In 1996, the movement to support shade grown coffee was sparked by the Smithsonian Institute’s Migratory Bird Center, which gathered environmentalists, farmers and coffee companies to address the problem and promote awareness of shade coffee.

Reasons to Get a Ride on Lawn Mower

October 3rd, 2009

Many homeowners often fret over mowing their lawns.  If your lawn is larger than half an acre or so, you should really consider stepping up to a ride on lawn mower.  Some people are sick of pushing their mower around all weekend.  Others just can’t physically manage to do it anymore.  Yet others simply don’t have the time.  Ride on lawn mowers cost a lot more than push mowers, but they get the job done a whole lot quicker, and you can do it without even breaking a sweat.  Unless you really enjoy the exercise or have a teenage son or daughter you can coerce into mowing the lawn, getting a ride on mower is a great idea.  If your lawn is an acre or larger, there aren’t a whole lot of reasons not to get a ride on mower.  I

Trailer Tents

October 2nd, 2009

One of the best ways to go camping in style and comfort is with a trailer tent. They are very popular because of how easy it is to use them, and set them up. When you reach the camp site it takes just a few minutes to be relaxing inside, and protected from the weather if it is bad. Trailer tent camping has taken off over the last few years because it is such an inexpensive way of taking the whole family away for a holiday, and you can do this every week of the year if you have the time and energy.

It is a great way to explore new parts of the country, or even abroad. And you will be able to enjoy the great outdoors any time of the year. It is a nice feeling to have a home away from home.

Diesel Heating for Campers

October 1st, 2009

Although propane heating has seem to have been the heating of choice for motor home owners and campers, diesel heating is become increasingly more popular, with many campers converting their mobile vans over to this.  One big benefit of diesel heating, like propane heating, is that it gives the camper freedom to camp anywhere they want. No more being limited to camping spots with electricity only.

As far as the advantage of using the diesel heater over propane heating, the most obvious advantage is that you can fill up on diesel just about anywhere, whereas it is not always that easy to find a place to fill up your propane bottles, especially the further away from town you get.  Diesel is also much safer to transport and to use than propane.

So if you’re looking for a portable heating system for your campervan, something to use instead of having to be hooked up only to the electricity, you should check out the options for installing a diesel heating system into your van. Most campers and portable homes convert over to diesel heating very easily.

Pack Rod

September 20th, 2009

What is a pack rod? A pack rod is a fishing pole that you can break down into smaller pieces, that can later be reconstructed with a small spinning real typically, carrying between 4lb and 10lb test. You are able to take this rod and pack it up with you wherever you go, hence the name pack rod. The way the pieces are built to fit together provides you incredible backbone and strength to fight fish. As long as you are patient, and don’t try to winch the fish around like you can with a baitcaster and heavy duty line, you will never have a problem from your pack rod. As a matter of fact, I keep one in my glove box for those times I’m waiting and there is a pond around.

Water Savings With Synthetic Grass

September 17th, 2009

With water restrictions hitting us hard and the prospect of another hot, dry summer fast approaching there is little chance that things are going to improve in terms of being allowed to water our gardens. That means another summer of brown grass crackling under our feet. That is, unless you take the step to replace your natural grass lawn with a new synthetic grass alternative.

Although the upfront cost of synthetic grass may seem a little steep the reality is that what you lose in the initial costs, you more than make up over the life of the product.

Savings can be made on the watering, mowing and, for some people, fertilizing the grass. With synthetic grass there is no longer any need for these tasks although the occasional rinse down might be required if the grass becomes dirty.

Not only that but there will be time savings to be made too. No-one really enjoys getting out on hot summer days to mow the lawn and clipping the edges. With synthetic grass you will save time, money and your energy and, ultimately, will enjoy your backyard even more than you do now.

Essential Gun Safes

September 12th, 2009

Gun safe is very essential in every house that has one or more guns. A gun safe like a biometric gun safe is secure and protective container for all type of guns. Gun safes are primarily used to prevent gun theft and also to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the gun.

Unlike olden days, where gun safes were made of wood and glass front, today’s gun safes are made of steel. Manufactures use heavy gauge steel, usually half inch thick to make the regular gun safes. Some of the gun safes have 2 layers of steel walls with ball bearing in between them. The doorjambs, door and the ceiling are made of 3 layers of steel to prevent damage from any attempted break-in. Nowadays gun safes are made fire resistant by adding a layer of insulator. This prevents the damage of any contents of the safe in the event of fire disasters. Gun safes also come with additional features like water resistant and rust resistant.

Gun safe can also be used to protect important documents and jewelry and other valuable investments. The high end gun safes are expensive, but when considered the protection they give to the valuables, every penny spent is worth.

One of the best places to go fishing in Alaska is Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay is an offshoot of the Bearing Sea that stretches two hundred fifty miles long by one hundred eighty miles wide between Alaska and the Alaskan Peninsula. The Alaskan Peninsula itself contains many major rivers that major runs of salmon return to for spawning. So, depending on the time of year Bristol Bay can be teeming with any combination of Chinook, silver, or chum salmon. But what really gives Bristol Bay its fame is the stocks of sockeye salmon. These are the salmon with the deep red color most commonly found in grocery stores because of their world-renowned great taste. Bristol Bay boasts the largest number of wild caught salmon of any fishery in the world.

Solar Powered Lights for a Greener World

September 2nd, 2009

We all have a responsibility of taking care of our world and you don’t have to go “all green” and live in the woods to make drastic improvements. For one thing you can start but turning your computer off at night and when you’re not using it and hit the switch so it won’t stay on standby with lights blinking. Don’t turn on the light if you don’t need it or use candles when possible.

For the people with garden you can use solar powered garden lights to illuminate the paths from the road to your front door.

Luckily more and more electrical gadgets will run on alternative energy such as wind, water and solar power and every time you switch to one of these you’re helping the environment but not using coal, oil or nuclear produced electricity.

If you are looking for a good commercial fishing supply then you are probably, or already have sifted through pages and pages of advertisers trying to get to your bottom dollar. The thing about these advertisers are, most of them at least, is that they are going to be fly by night. They don’t have a name that you can recognize, because it hasn’t been around long enough. This is a serious problem. This is why I suggest that if you are looking for a commercial fishing supply vendor, that when you find one, you build a strong relationship with them. This will help you keep prices down in the future, and that in the end adds to your bottom dollar. What business owner doesn’t want that?

Pet Safety for Your Above Ground Swimming Pool

August 25th, 2009

One of the family members that you need to take into account as you are setting up your above-ground swimming pool is your family pet. Whether you have a dog or a cat, taking just a little bit of time to think about their safety around the pool will help to keep a tragic accident from happening to them.

If you have an above ground pool deck, think about a way to keep your pets from getting up onto it. You may want to investigate getting a pool alarm system that can attach to your pet’s collar and alert you when it becomes wet, or have a pool alarm that sounds when the water surface is broken. And lastly, think about seeing if your pet can swim and get out of the pool on their own.

Being Safe When Using Ladders

August 25th, 2009

Different types of ladders such as step ladders are something that is just needed around the house to allow you to reach things that are too high off the ground. Although ladders are a simple device, they can be quite dangerous if you don’t use them correctly. One of the things that you can do to make sure you don’t injure yourself, is to buy a ladder that is the right size. Often times in order to save money people will buy ladders that are too short. This will cause them to go pass certain rungs on the ladder that they shouldn’t pass. Smaller step ladders can also be dangerous as well since people are less careful with these types of ladders compared to the longer ones. Just be careful when using ladders in general.
