Alicante Airport in the Costa Blanca

June 8th, 2010

The province of Alicante is a part of the Valencian community of Spain. It is one of the most popular regions of Spain due to its many attractions. Most tourists enjoy the cool Mediterranean climate of the province as it adds beauty and enjoyment to their vacation and visits. The Alicante airport is another reason for the popularity of the province and the city of the same name.

The airport is numbered sixth when it comes to the busy routine of flights into and out of Spain. It is ranked number one for being the busiest one in Valencia. Being at a convenient distance from many of the province’s well known cities, the airport is also a favorite landing spot for people visiting the nearby Murcia region. Although the airport is located in the beautiful city of Elche, it is called Alicante airport due to the province it is situated in. This gives an idea of its importance as a central focus for all flights into the province.

Almost eighty percent of flights arriving at the airport are from international destinations. These flights carry people from Britain, Netherlands and Germany among many other countries worldwide. The airport, which began operating in 1967, was called El Altet in the beginning due to the area it was built in. It was built to cater to the growing number of tourists that visited the country each year. The old La Rabassa aerodome was not sufficient to handle the visitors as the tourism industry flourished in Spain, so there was need for a more spacious and modernized airport. The present airport has two terminals and is capable of housing 12 million travelers.

However, it is also quickly becoming insufficient because of the influx of tourists. In order to cater to the ever-increasing number of passengers, a new terminal is under construction. This will allow the Alicante airport to serve 20 million people who are travelling in or out of the country.

Finding Cheap Beach Property

June 3rd, 2010

Many times you can find the cheapest beachfront property easily by searching through the internet.  Not only are you likely to find better prices, it saves you a lot of time and energy by not having to visit every property that you’re thinking about investing in.  Instead, you can make a short list of potential properties and visit only the ones that you have a lot of interest in.  You’ll also be able to see numerous different offerings from different realtors and be able to get a better overall picture of the real estate market.  Here are a few tips to make your online home search go smoothly.

There are several different options for site focused on buying beachfront property.  The biggest sites, and your first stop are the official sites of major realtors.  The biggest ones, like Century 21 have national listings, so not only can you look at listings in your area, you can look at ones across the country.  The larger sites should also be able to refer you to local agents, who can email you more detailed information on local listings.

Once you’ve seen what major agencies have to offer, your next stop should be online classifieds such as Craigslist for “for sale by owner” listings.  Real estate agents take fees out of the buying and selling portion of the sales price, so by negotiating directly with the seller, you should save quite a bit of money.  However, you’re also much less protected from bad sellers, so make sure you use caution in your purchase.

The last place you can look online for beach homes are online auction sites.  These offer the greatest deals, because you might find foreclosed or distressed properties, but they also offer the greatest risk and the least ability to thoroughly inspect the property before you buy it.

Looking online is a great way to find cheap properties and learn more about local property markets.  Start searching today.

Sax on the Vinalopo

February 7th, 2010

Sax Spain is one of those really picturesque towns that sits on the side of a hillside and looks like it’s just about to slide down. This town, like a number of similar towns in the Costa Blanca, is completely dominated by its defensive castles. Sax itself is located in the province of Alicante between the two towns of Elda and Villena. It has a population of approximately 9000 people and the municipality has an area of 63.5 km². The closest airport to Sax is Alicante airport which is just outside Elche, although you can fly in to Valencia in the North or Murcia in the south.

The history of this place goes back well before history was ever recorded. There are prehistoric excavations being undertaken in the Costa Blanca region and more and more evidence is being found of prehistoric inhabitants. But there are really impressive monuments to the past in Sax. Up on a limestone ridge is built the Castle of Sax (Castillo de Sax), which was built in the 10th century. The castle illuminates the town at night time. It is the Levante Tower that was built in the 12th century that still survives today. The castle was taken in the 13th century by the forces of James I of Aragon during the Reconquista.

The majority of economic activity in the area still revolves around agriculture. The produce of this agriculture includes olives and local olive oil, fruits and vegetables, and grapes which are used in the production of the local wines. The town has also developed an industry which produces shoes and other goods made from leather. When you come to this town, like many towns in the province, you will notice how friendly the people are and how warm and welcoming they can be. You have plenty of choice when it comes to shops and restaurants, bars and cafes.

Also, this area is completely open to exploration. Many people that come to this part of the world do so with a view to relaxing on the beach in between going to be bar for Food & Drink. Some of the holidaymakers who embark on a package deal to one of the cities such as Benidorm or Denia, would be inclined to stay around those areas and not venture to far from the hotel or the beach. But for those who are a bit more adventurous, there is far more to see a far more to do in the Costa Blanca and then first meets the eye.

Advantages of Travel Printers

February 4th, 2010

If you already have your own travel printer and you’re thinking about buying another desktop printer as a dedicated home printer, think first if the additional investment is really worth it. Having one printer may already be enough to provide your printing needs, even at home. For purposes of discussion, we will rely heavily on the Canon Pixma iP100 as a reference. This printer is perfect as a reference since it is one of the highly sought for travel printers.

A Travel Printer Makes a Good Home Printer
What are the features you are looking for in a home printer? As long as it prints at a decent speed and has acceptable resolution, it should be enough for a home printer. The Pixma ip100 prints at a speed of 18 pages per minute for monochrome and 14ppm for color. These are already decent speeds. Your average desktop printer has a speed between 20 to 30ppm. Printers that print more than 30ppm tend to be more expensive and are generally used as business printers. The Pixma iP100 prints at a high resolution of 9600 x 2400 dots per inch. This resolution is already good enough to print photo quality prints, let alone graphical presentations.

Smaller Is Better
Many may disagree with this statement. However, when it comes to cleaning or tidying things up in the house, smaller is definitely better. Since most printers made for traveling are small, finding a space to store them is easier. You could easily hide them in your drawer or simply put it on your desk and it still wouldn’t be a bother. If you need to carry them within the house, it is a lot easier since most of them weigh less than 5 lbs. The latest mobile printers from Canon and HP weigh approximately 4.4lbs and 4.5lbs respectively. You can even ask kids to help out with the chores since these printers are light enough that children won’t mind carrying them.

Battery Pack Considerations
One clear advantage mobile printers have over desktop printers is their secondary power options. In layman’s terms, they have battery packs. Without power, desktop printers are reduced to paperweights. The Canon Pixma iP100, aside from operating on a 110-220V AC outlet, has an additional battery option that allows you to print additional 290 pages on a 3-hour charge. It’s either the AC supply, the optional battery or you can use the car adapter. That way, you don’t lose momentum while printing if the power dies. Of course, you will need your laptop since a desktop computer also runs on AC power.

Multiple Interface Capabilities
Since portability is the primary design consideration in making mobile printers, manufacturers include the connectivity features that are compatible with other mobile gadgets. Most mobile gadgets have either infrared or Bluetooth connectivity. That is why the Canon Pixma ip100 is capable of interfacing with mobile gadgets via infrared or Bluetooth. Even without a computer, you can still print pictures out of this wireless-enabled device. Some desktop printers have this interface as well.

Travel printers may not offer the advantages of your normal desktop printer, like flexible paper handling, duplex printing, or even heavy-duty printing. However, portable printers offer other advantages that desktop printers simply cannot.

Teaching English in China

January 14th, 2010

Teaching English overseas is a great way to experience a country, and China provides lots of opportunities for teaching. China can be an amazing place to teach and a great opportunity to explore a unique and rich culture. Teaching English in China can be a very rewarding experience but it is one that requires a lot of patience and flexibility.

Teaching in China
requires very few qualifications. It used to be well known for not needing anything more than being a native English speaker and enthusiasm to teach. These easy requirements led to an overwhelming number of westerners flocking to China to teach. Recently, China has tried to up their standards. They still don’t require you to have completed a TEFL course, but they do now require teachers to hold a degree, although the degree can be in any subject area.

It is a good idea to find your teaching job by using a company to help you. They will protect you against contract changes and they will have thoroughly screened all the schools they deal with. This will also ensure that you are teaching in a good environment. Your job will usually start either in August at the beginning of the school year, or in February when students get back from break.

The regular monthly salary rates for China tend to be lower than in other Asian countries. Their rates range from $600-1,000 USD a month. One reason why rates are lower is because the cost of living in China is also lower. Your airfare can also often be included, as well as your living quarters (most often a furnished apartment on school property).

Your work week will usually consist of 20-30 hours of teaching time, leaving you lots of spare time to explore the city and surrounding area. Be prepared to teach a large class of children. It is not unheard of for classes to be made up of more than 60 children. Even though you will have a lot of students, Chinese students are very easy to teach because they are obedient, are eager to learn and are respectful.

Finding Eco Tours Traveling with Contiki

January 14th, 2010

With more and more young people being concerned with the state of the environment and our impact on it, this concern has spilled over into the way we travel. Responsible travel has become a high priority for young people planning to embark on a long-term trip or even on vacation. We are concerned with not having a negative social or environmental impact on the places we visit.

We want the tours we travel with to have respect for the local environment and economy. Traveling green has become an important issue in tourism and many tour groups have responded with eco tours designed to leave the smallest footprint behind.

Contiki Tours has some eco tours available and when you are visiting more endangered areas like in South East Asia or parts of Australia they have eco friendly accommodations. Their camping style trips as well offer an eco friendly way to leave a smaller footprint while also saving money on hotels. However, even with a few options available, eco tourism is not a main focus for Contiki, and if this is an important feature for you, you may want to look into some other tour companies.

Contiki, though, is working towards reducing their impact on the communities they visit by monitoring and minimizing their amount of waste, energy use and paper consumption so that they can continue to have positive working relationships with the cities and locations that they are in.

The coaches that Contiki uses to transport their travelers to various locations around the world are one of the most environmentally friendly forms of travel available. So, although Contiki may not have tours designed specifically towards ecotourism, they incorporate the overall attitude of sustainable travel into all their tours and believe in supporting the local communities in which they have tours.

Working Through A Conditional Green Card

November 28th, 2009

A person or couple applying for the k1 visa or the k3 visa has the potential of receiving a green card with restrictions or conditions placed on it. In the case of a k1 visa where the couples are already married, the authorities are working to ensure the marriage is valid. This should not come as a surprise as even Hollywood has glamorized people trying to get green card’s illegally through fraudulent marriages. For this specific instance, the authorities will work to make sure you are not in the marriage simply to gain residency. Hence the conditional green card.

But this is the modern times and marriages do fail, sometimes before their first year or two has been completed. If this is the case, then the green card awarded may be revoked. This is part of the reason a condition is placed on the green card. Unfortunately in this case, the marriage could have been legitimate.

Getting a conditional green card is still a positive step to receiving permanent residency in the United States. Just remember to keep track of the time as you will need to apply within 90 days prior to your green card expiring for those conditions to be potentially lifted.

European Travel Stories

October 31st, 2009

There are literally hundreds of blogs out there, covering nearly every foreign country you could ever hope to learn more about, all being written by tech savvy expats trying to explore the culture. The cool thing about this is you can get travel stories from Europe or travel stories from Asia all told from the point of view of an outsider trying to fit in in these foreign lands. And that’s exactly what makes these expat blogs so valuable as a travel planning resource. It gives you, the reader/travel planner, insight into some of the most commonly made mistakes and most importantly they give you a great look at how not to come across as a loud American when you visit these vibrant and diverse cultures of which you would otherwise be completely ignorant. Many of these expat blogs are lovingly cared for and dedicated to providing up to date info on the most interesting things to do when visiting for the first time and can even make for a great replacement to the old guide book.

There are beaches and there are beaches! Let’s face it when you have a big family it’s not enough just to sit down on any old beach by the sea. Cleanliness and safety are both very important concerns for a stress free holiday. One of the attractions of the beaches in Cyprus is that many of them have received the Blue Flag award. The Foundation for Environmental Education st up the Blue Flag Beaches campaign back in the 1980′s and if a beach is classified as Blue Flag then they have to have met certain standards. Safety wise there has to be adequate lifeguards and lifesaving equipment including first aid supplies and safe access. As for cleanliness all bins and rubbish must be managed, there must be clean toilets a clean beach and high standards of quality bathing water. There are around fifty Blue Flag beaches in Cyprus which means you can enjoy a day by the sea in comfort.

Good Places for a Tropical Vacation

October 13th, 2009

I believe it’s a fairly well known fact that there are exactly eleventy-billion tropical resorts operating in the world today. All of which are on one top ten list or another that run on repeats of Travel Channel shows. All of these places lie at various points on a ridiculously broad spectrum also, this makes it unbelievable difficult to find tropical locations for a GOOD vacation. Or does it? Suck it up, people. You commute almost two hours to work everyday only to sit in a cubicle for nine hours and commute back home for a little nap before you do it again. Day, after day, after day. You could have a good tropical vacation if you sat on a deck chair in a tanning salon sipping piña coladas for a few days. A good vacation should never start with weeks and weeks of stressing out over which of eleventy-billion relatively similar island paradises you should be going to. Just sit back and enjoy the time away from your desk for what it is…much needed time away from your desk.

Traveling in Asia

October 13th, 2009

Traveling in Asia is such a broad topic that it seems few Americans know what they are getting themselves into when they start looking at vacationing in the world’s largest continent. Even deciding where to travel to can be a huge undertaking. Do you want ritzy? Do you want cheap? Are you looking for culture? History? Nightlife? From the poorest villages of South Asia to the ridiculously over-priced and unsleeping mega cities of Japan there is something for every type of traveler, which only serves to further highlight how important it is to narrow down your searches before even considering where to start looking for your next Asian vacation. If you like to consider yourself a budget traveler then there are several Asian countries where, even in today’s economic climate, the dollar will still bring you so much more value that it will in the US that it can be tempting to extend your stay through retirement and live off of street meat for the rest of your life. But as with any vacation planning, the key lies in knowing what you’re looking for.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

September 30th, 2009

Melbourne-SkylineWhen traveling to Australia what are your top picks? Sydney? The Gold Coast? Well how about Melbourne?

Melbourne is the sports capital of Australia with over half a dozen international sports venues. Melbourne hosts the Australian Grand Prix, Australian Open and our own AFL Grand Final. I suppose you may have also heard of ‘the race that stops a nation?’. The Melbourne Cup is a public holiday on which you will be hard pressed not to find an Australian tuning into a television to watch the big race.

Sport is not all Melbourne has to offer though. With an amazing city filled with shopping and fashion, big green parks scattered all around the CBD and a huge multicultural community, Melbourne should definitely be on your wish list.

Horseneck Beach State Park

September 25th, 2009

With the summer having ended I have had to stop going to my favorite beach – Horseneck Beach MA. I spent more time than I ever have in years’ past, mainly because I had more free time on my hands this summer.

The beach and park is now real familiar to me, to the point were I was able to get around a lot of the common obstacles that the first or occasional visitors would easily get caught up in. Things like the timing of the weekend traffic, avoiding the expensive concession stand purchases by bringing my own supplies and knowing just were to walk to in order to not get crowded out as the morning long arrivals continue to fill the beach.

With the leaves beginning to change and the cool weather today I am already dearly missing Horseneck Beach.

What is The Advantage of Booking a Boutique Hotel Room

September 20th, 2009

When you go to a distant city, you are likely to book your room in advance. What first comes into your mind is some big name like Radisson or Hyatt. I suggest trying to look for something out of the box, and google city name plus bed and breakfast or boutique hotel.

Of course beware of low service or cheaters. To avoid these mishaps you check for hotel reviews on specialized sites. Hotel stuff speed of reaction to your request and their manners or tone are often true indicators of the hotel level. I prefer to speak by phone whenever I find any solution on the Internet.

Boutique Sunflower Hotel Kiev is a nice option for both seasoned and young travelers coming to the capital of Ukraine. With decent rates and fantastic location near famous Maydan, it also surprises on the terms of service and level of rooms.

Precautions For Budget Travelers And Free Travel Vagabonds

September 11th, 2009

Budget travelers are most often looking out for great deals as well as free travel opportunities when they are on the move. However, the ‘traveling for free’ path can be a significantly more vulnerable one than usual travel scenarios . Because of this, more precautions need to be taken into consideration.

It is not a bad idea, no matter what kind of traveling you are doing, to have a return ticket or enough resources to get one before you set out on your journey. You don’t want to be stuck just anywhere in the world. Also travel only when in good health. Medical expenses can really destroy your travel for free vagabonding. Poor health, even if no serious monetary costs are involved, slows you down and prevent you from getting the most out of your trip. It will be beneficial for the budget traveler to spread his or her money and precious items around. Don’t put everything into the same pocket of your bag. By wearing modest clothes and bringing an average-looking bag, you will also be attracting less attention to yourself and reduce the risks of running into problematic situations.

Travel Songs to Listen Too

September 10th, 2009

How would you go about defining a “travel song?” Does it have to actually be a song about traveling or can it just be that great song that everyone knows the words to and can sing together in an over packed car during an extended road trip across several state lines? The song I always thing of first whenever people ask me about good traveling songs is, End of the Line by the Traveling Wilbury’s. (It’s track ten on their Volume 1 album. Fun Fact: they eventually produced a Volume 3 album but there never was a Volume 2.) Even though traveling is right there in the band name and the word road is used repeatedly in the song it’s more of a song about death than about travel…and yet, THIS is the song I like to sing with my friends while we’re traveling. I guess what I’m asking is, do the people listening to the song have any say in whether or not what they’re listening to actually belongs in the category of travel songs?

Learn About Timeshare Promotions

September 3rd, 2009

When vacation time rolls around but the check book says no, it is time to consider timeshare promotions as a cheap way to have a vacation.

There are many ways to cut vacation costs using timeshares promotions. Sometimes you will find free lodging and others you will find free event tickets. Some in the Orlando area even offer free theme park tickets. In any of these cases, the promotions will save you several hundred dollars on your next vacation.

What then is the catch. Traditionally, there is only one catch. In order for your family to receive the vacation promotion, you must listen to a 90 minute or longer sales presentation about the timeshare. You will be reminded of the fun you have had, be ask if you would like to return once or twice a year, and be offered one or more weeks each year as long as you purchase the timeshare. Then you will be asked to make a decision.
