The islands of Thailand, and Southeast Asia in general, are fantastic values for travel dollars. With the economic recession forcing travelers to be more savvy with their money, value has become paramount. Flights to Asia are cheaper than they have been since the late 1980s, and once a traveler arrives their money will go much further than island destinations in the Western Hemisphere. Good tropical islands like Phuket or the Phi Phi islands have much to offer the traveler.
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, and has the most modern facilities and amenities involved with tourism. It is a great base to visit other good tropical islands in the area, like Phi Phi, which is an isolated island with bungalows and blinding white sand. Transportation between Thailand itself is cheap, as well as getting to other countries in the area. Carriers such as Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Air Andaman, and Dragonair will all fly to destinations in the area. Now is a great time to travel to Asia on the very cheap.
