Glass Christmas ornaments originated in Germany in the 1800s. The German glass makers discovered a way to coat the inside of the glass with silver oxide  and make it appear solid. This had two effects one of making the glass reflective, and secondly making it able to be easily painted. These hand painted ornaments were made in made different shapes and became very popular glass Christmas tree ornaments. Hand painted glass Christmas ornaments are still available today, made using the traditional techinques, and are just are sought after as the antique versions.
