Menopause symptoms after hysterectomy can be worse in some ways then the symptoms experience by women going through the process naturally. Menopause is the period when a woman’s body starts to produce less and less estrogen. As the levels of estrogen decrease many changes happen in the body that bring on what we think of as menopause symptoms. Hot flashes, irritability, weight gain, etc. can all be attributed to the decrease in estrogen levels. Usually the decrease in estrogen levels is gradual and the symptoms come on slowly. With the removal of the ovaries in a hysterectomy a woman stops producing estrogen immediately and with no gradual decrease. This can cause the onslaught of many symptoms almost overnight and can be very hard to cope with. Hormone replacement therapy is often a course of treatment with women experience menopause symptoms after a hysterectomy.
